Local Memorials
The Clifton Hall Colliery disaster occurred on the 18th June 1885. A massive explosion below ground at 9:20 am ripped through the trencherbone mine. This led to the deaths of 178 men and boys, The oldest 65 and the youngest just 13. Many of the victims are buried in St Augustine's Church, including 64 people in a mass grave. A memorial to commemorate the disaster stands in the church grounds.
