The Last Pit in the Valley was produced by the Irwell Valley Mining Project (IVMP) in order to educate and remind people that not so very long ago, the Irwell Valley had a thriving mining community that took great pride in their work. I hope it will remind readers that coal was the source of the industrial revolution which made this country great. This book is dedicated to all the men, women and children working in the mines and to all who have been associated with the mining industry that worked hard to provide the coal that gave us light and warmth.
